I think it takes time to establish trust whether personal or professional. The more you talk TO clients and not AT them, the better you establish your credibility. The question is how does a consultant - large or small - market their services so that they can establish that trust. I think Cal Harrison in the blog post above has gone through some of his own learnings on how best to do this: starting from the way he built and cultivated his mailing list and the way he's learned to modify his email style and content. Listening to your customers can provide great insights into how to best keep them and, also, how to find new customers.

Selling consulting services is much like selling thin air until you can establish credibility with a prospect. This isn't such a problem for those under the umbrella of a well known consulting firm however, most of us are only recognised by established clients. "Don't try to behave like a sales person. Instead, use consultative exploratory skills. It's how you sell rather than what you say that builds trust.

Often we forget the little guy, the SMB, in our discussions of the comings and goings of the Internet marketing industry. Sure there are times like this when a report surfaces talking about their issues and concerns but, for the most part, we like to talk about big brands and how they do the Internet marketing thing well or not so well.
